Producing and disseminating fake news is one of the important and developing threats in the communictaions era, according to the consensus of the experts in this field. Governments, opposing groups, intelligence agencies and profiteering individuals use this tool to falsify truth, provoke the public opinion, weakening social trust and building instability. This phenomenon affects different dimensions of the national security of countries, especially the Islamic Republic of Iran and has turned to an effective tool in the modern warfare, particularly incognitive warfare. In this research, considering investigating the functions of fake news in cognitive warfare, attempts have been made to review the detection, identification and countering the dissemination of such news through concentrating on the cyberspace and technologies such as artificial intelligence, machie learning. This research has addressed the detection of machine and human methods to counter fake news using content analysis methods and utilizing library and citational resources. Findings show that effective countering the fake news requires simultaneous use of technological tools, legal infrasrtuctures, oprimizing media knowledge and coordinated polic-making. In the end, suggestions have been made to improve countering solutions against this kind of threat in the form of a comprehensive package.
